Vinyl, fiberglass or gunite
- Vinyl liner — the lowest build cost; the liner is replaced every 8–12 years.
- Fiberglass — a one-piece shell set in days, with a smooth surface and low upkeep; sizes and shapes are limited to what can be shipped.
- Gunite — sprayed concrete in any shape and size, the longest life and the highest price; it takes weeks to build and is resurfaced every decade or so.
What comes after the pool
- A barrier. Most codes require a fence around the pool. Around a typical pool area it is $4,074–$10,112 — see pool fence cost and the barrier rules.
- Decking or pavers around the water.
- Landscaping repair after the excavator has crossed the yard.
