Roof pitch questions.
What does '6/12 pitch' mean?
It means the roof rises 6 inches vertically for every 12 inches of horizontal run. 6/12 is one of the most common pitches on US homes.
How do I convert pitch to degrees?
Use arctangent: degrees = arctan(rise / run). For 6/12, that's arctan(6/12) ≈ 26.57°. The calculator does this automatically.
What is the pitch multiplier?
It's the factor you multiply your building footprint by to get the actual sloped roof area. For 6/12 pitch it's about 1.118 — meaning the sloped surface is 11.8% larger than the flat footprint.
What pitch counts as 'walkable'?
Pitches up to 6/12 (~26.6°) are generally walkable without harnesses. 7/12–9/12 require caution and proper PPE. 10/12 and steeper need roof brackets, scaffolding, or fall arrest systems.
Pitch detection — automatic — built into SatelliteQuotes.
Stop measuring pitches by hand. The full SatelliteQuotes app detects roof pitch from satellite imagery and applies the multiplier automatically.
