Landscaping quotes are the hardest bids in home improvement to compare, for one reason: nobody writes down what is included. Two companies walk the same yard and come back with $6,000 and $19,000, both honest, both describing a different project.

The five things that make bids differ
- Soil preparation. Rototilling and amending four inches of topsoil across 2,000 square feet is a day of machine time. Laying sod on existing dirt is an afternoon. Both are called installing sod.
- Grading and drainage. If water currently runs towards the house, fixing that is the project. Ignoring it makes the bid cheaper and the problem permanent.
- Plant size. A three-gallon shrub costs a third of a fifteen-gallon one and looks like it for two years. Quotes should give container sizes, not plant names alone.
- Irrigation. Moving or adding heads and zones after new beds go in costs real money and is frequently omitted.
- Disposal. Old sod, stumps and spoil have to leave. That is trucks and tipping fees.
Artificial turf versus sod, honestly
Turf costs five to ten times what sod costs to install. It wins on total cost somewhere around year seven to ten, and sooner where water is metered and expensive or where shade kills grass anyway. It loses on heat - turf runs considerably hotter than grass in direct sun - and on anything you want to plant into later. The correct answer depends on your water bill and your dog, not on a sales pitch.

Measuring the yard before anyone visits
