3-Tab vs Architectural Shingles

Definition: A 3-tab shingle is a single flat layer of asphalt shingle cut into three equal tabs, so the roof looks like a grid of rectangles. An architectural (laminated or dimensional) shingle is two or more layers bonded together with irregular cutouts, so the roof looks textured, like shake or slate. Architectural shingles are heavier, rated for higher winds and are now the standard on new roofs.

How to tell them apart

Look at the roof from the street. 3-tab shingles show even, repeating rectangles with straight vertical slots between them, like brickwork. Architectural shingles show random-width tabs, a darker shadow band under each course and no straight line of slots. Up close, an architectural shingle is visibly thicker: you can see two layers at its edge.

What the parts of a shingle are called

The exposed part of a 3-tab shingle you see on the roof is the tab; the slots between tabs are called cutouts or keyways, and the hidden upper part that is nailed and overlapped is the headlap. On an architectural shingle the bottom layer that shows through the gaps is the backer or shadow layer, and the strip where the two layers overlap is the nailing zone, which makers brand as StrikeZone, NailTrak or SureNail.

The differences that matter

Wind. Where the architectural lines we document state a standard wind rating it is 110 to 130 mph, and higher with the maker's accessories. 3-tab shingles typically carry lower wind ratings, and their single-layer tabs are the ones that lift and tear in storms.

Warranty. Every architectural line on our shingle pages carries a limited lifetime warranty. 3-tab lines typically carry shorter warranties; check the current written one before you buy, and ask whether your colour is still made if you are matching a repair.

Weight and life. Architectural shingles weigh more per square (CertainTeed lists 211–225 lb for Landmark), and the extra asphalt is much of why they last longer in sun and wind.

Look. 3-tab gives a flat, uniform roof; architectural gives depth and hides small imperfections in the roof deck.

Price. 3-tab costs less per bundle. On a whole roof the difference is smaller than the bundle price suggests, because labour, tear-off, underlayment and flashing cost the same either way. Our quote engine prices architectural shingles: about $12,400–$14,300 for a 2,000 sq ft house at a 6/12 pitch with tear-off, at US-average roofer wages. It has no 3-tab rate, so we do not quote one.

Which one to buy

For a whole new roof, architectural: the wind rating and warranty are better and the cost gap over the life of the roof is small. 3-tab still makes sense for a shed, a garage you will replace, or patching an existing 3-tab roof where a colour match is available. Compare the lines side by side on our shingle brand pages.
