How many downspouts do I need?
At least one for every 35 feet of gutter run, and enough for the roof each one drains: about 600 sq ft of roof per 2×3" downspout on a 5" gutter, about 1,200 sq ft per 3×4" on a 6" gutter. The calculator takes whichever asks for more, run by run, and puts them at the ends of each run first, where they go on a real house.
Why is the gutter run shorter than the house outline?
Gutters go on the eaves, the level edges where water runs off. The sloped ends of a gable roof (the rakes) get none. On a 60 × 30 ft gable ranch that is 120 ft of gutter, not the 180 ft perimeter, so pricing by perimeter overcharges by half. On a hip roof every edge is an eave and the gutter goes all the way round.
Which edges does it put gutters on?
It starts from a guess: on a gable roof, the edges along the length of the house; on a hip roof, every edge. Tap any edge on the photo to switch it. Porches, garages and dormers with their own roofs are easy to add the same way.
5-inch or 6-inch gutters?
5-inch K-style suits most houses. Go 6-inch for large or steep roofs, long runs, or heavy-rain areas: it carries roughly 40% more water and takes the bigger 3×4" downspout, so fewer downspouts are needed.
How accurate is it?
The outline comes from aerial building footprints, which can miss an overhang or include a porch; check it on the map and drag a corner if needed. Lengths are measured on the footprint, so add the overhang at the corners if your eaves stick out a long way. It is a takeoff to quote and order from, and a contractor confirms on site.
