How many bundles of shingles are in one square?
For most architectural shingles, 3 bundles cover one square (100 sq ft). 3-tab is also typically 3 bundles per square. Premium designer shingles can be 4–5 bundles per square depending on profile.
How many shingles in one bundle?
Architectural bundles weigh 60–80 lbs and contain about 21–29 shingles. The exact count varies by manufacturer; what matters is the coverage in square feet — usually 33.3 sq ft per bundle for architectural.
How much extra should I order?
Standard waste is 10–12% on simple gable roofs, 15% on roofs with valleys and dormers, 18–20% on hip roofs and complex layouts. Always round UP to whole bundles.
Should I buy ridge cap separately?
Yes — ridge cap is sold per linear foot and isn't included in field shingle bundles. Plan for ridge + hip linear footage × the cap product's coverage rate.
