Where the reports come from
The NOAA Storm Prediction Center (SPC) publishes a daily list of severe-weather reports: hail with its measured diameter, the place and the time. We keep every Texas hail report within about 60 km of Austin and match them to the address you enter. The same reports feed our lead finder for Austin contractors.
A report is a point, not a footprint. Hail falls in streaks; a report 2 km away means hail of that size was measured nearby on that day, and an inspection is the only way to know what reached your roof.
What to do after hail
- Note the storm date from the table — it is what an inspector and an insurer will ask for.
- Look for dents on gutters, downspouts, AC fins and soft metal: the easiest signs from the ground.
- Do not climb on the roof. Have a licensed roofer inspect it, and get a second opinion before signing.
- Know the price before anyone visits: a free roof quote measured from satellite.
Questions
How do I know if it hailed at my house in Austin?
Enter your address above. The check lists every hail report the NOAA Storm Prediction Center holds within 10 km of it in the last two years, with the date, the measured hail size and the distance. Reports are points where a spotter or member of the public measured hail, so a report 3 km away means hail fell nearby — not necessarily on your roof.
What size hail damages a roof?
Hail around 1 inch across (quarter size) and larger is the size usually associated with damage to asphalt shingles; smaller hail can still damage older or worn roofs, gutters and screens. The check highlights reports of 1 inch or more.
When did it last hail in Austin?
Enter any Austin address to see the most recent reports near it. NOAA reports are published within a day of a storm, and this tool refreshes from them regularly.
Should I file an insurance claim after hail?
Have the roof inspected first, and read your policy: many set a deadline for reporting storm damage, counted from the storm date. The report dates on this page are the storm dates NOAA recorded, which is what an inspector or adjuster will ask for.
Which areas does the Austin hail check cover?
About 50 km around downtown Austin: Austin, Round Rock, Cedar Park, Leander, Pflugerville, Georgetown, Lakeway, Buda and Kyle. Outside that, NOAA publishes national reports at spc.noaa.gov.
