What to do after hail

  • Write down the storm date from the table — it is what an inspector and an insurer will ask for.
  • Look for dents on gutters, downspouts, AC fins and soft metal: the easiest signs from the ground.
  • Stay off the roof. Have a licensed roofer inspect it, and get a second opinion before signing anything.
  • Know the price before anyone knocks: a free roof quote measured from satellite.

Hail by city, 2016–2025

NOAA hail reports within 25 km of each city's centre, most 1-inch-plus first. Each city page has the year-by-year record; all 342 large US cities are ranked in the US cities with the most hail; this week's storms are in recent hail reports by state.

Questions

How do I find out if it hailed at my house?

Enter your address above. The check lists every hail report the NOAA Storm Prediction Center holds within 10 km of it, newest first, with the date, the measured hail size and the distance. Switch to “Last 10 years” for a decade of history.

Does a hail report near me mean my roof is damaged?

No. A report is a point where a spotter or member of the public measured hail. Hail falls in streaks, so a report 3 km away means hail of that size fell nearby that day — only an inspection tells you what reached your roof.

What size hail damages a roof?

Hail around 1 inch across (quarter size) and larger is the size usually associated with damage to asphalt shingles. Smaller hail can still mark older roofs, gutters, screens and AC fins. Reports of 1 inch or more are highlighted.

What date should I give my insurer?

The storm date in the table is the date NOAA recorded the hail. Insurers and roofers ask for it; many policies limit how long after a storm you can claim, so check yours.

Where does the data come from?

The NOAA Storm Prediction Center: its yearly archive for 2016 to 2024 and its daily reports since, refreshed every week. Reports from the archive carry no place name, so the location column shows a dash for those.
