A driveway is two products stacked on top of each other: the surface you see, and the base you never see. The surface sets the look. The base decides whether it lasts eight years or twenty-five. Guess which one most quotes leave out.

Asphalt is cheaper to lay and wants sealing every three to five years. Concrete costs roughly double and asks for nothing except patience while it cures. In cold climates asphalt handles frost movement better; in hot ones it softens and ruts under parked weight.
The base is the whole argument
A residential asphalt driveway wants 4 to 6 inches of compacted aggregate under 2 to 3 inches of asphalt. Concrete wants 4 inches of slab over 4 inches of base, with control joints cut within a day of the pour.
Skip the base and the driveway looks identical on day one. Year three it alligators at the apron, year five the edges crumble, and no amount of sealing brings it back. That is the difference hiding inside a quote that is half the price of the others.
What a paving quote should contain
- Square footage, measured rather than eyeballed
- Demolition and removal of the existing surface, with disposal
- Excavation depth and where the spoil goes
- Base material, depth in inches, and compaction method
- Surface depth in inches, and the mix or concrete strength
- Drainage and slope - water has to go somewhere, and it should not be your garage
- Edge treatment, apron and the tie-in to the street or sidewalk
- Curing or cooling time before you can drive on it
- Warranty, in years, with what voids it
Overlay or full replacement
An overlay puts new asphalt on top of old. It costs roughly half a replacement and makes sense only when the existing base is sound and the surface is not cracked all the way through. Over a failed base it buys two or three years and cracks in the same places, because the cracks are coming from underneath.
Commercial paving is a different quote
If you are quoting a lot rather than a driveway, three things change the number: traffic loading, which drives thicker lifts and a heavier mix; phasing, because the lot has to stay partly open; and night or weekend work, which carries a labour premium. Ask for the quote to state lift thickness, mix designation and phasing plan, or the bids are not comparable.
Striping, ADA stalls, wheel stops and signage are usually separate line items. Have them priced explicitly rather than assumed.
Getting a number before anyone visits
A driveway is a flat rectangle, which makes it the easiest thing on a property to measure from above. Trace it from aerial imagery, multiply by the ranges here, and you have a band to judge every bid against. Free paving estimates are genuinely free - measuring takes minutes - so collect three.
