“—” means the maker's pages do not state it. Maximum wind warranties need the maker's accessories and high-wind nailing; each line's page says what.
GAF shingles
GAF Timberline HDZ
GAF's best-selling architectural shingle, built around a wide nailing strip (StrikeZone) and a wind warranty with no top speed when installed with GAF's accessories. 23 colors in two collections.
GAF Timberline UHDZ
GAF's top Timberline: the same size as HDZ but with a deeper two-line shadow pattern, a Class 4 impact rating from a reinforced mat, and a 30-year algae warranty instead of 25.
GAF Timberline AS II
GAF's Class 4 option built on SBS-modified asphalt rather than a reinforced mat; same dimensions as other Timberlines, with a 25-year algae warranty. Its sister product Grand Sequoia AS uses the same asphalt.
GAF Grand Sequoia
GAF's heavier designer shingle: a taller, oversized tab (17¼ in) with 5 in exposure that reads as hand-split shake, rated Class 4 in the standard (non-AS) version.
CertainTeed shingles
CertainTeed Landmark
CertainTeed's standard architectural shingle: a two-layer laminate with a marked nailing strip (NailTrak), a Class 3 impact rating and a wind warranty that rises from 110 to 160 mph with CertainTeed starter and ridge.
CertainTeed Landmark PRO
The heavier step up from Landmark (231–240 lb a square against 211–225), with higher-contrast Max Def colors and a 30-year algae warranty, with the same wind and impact ratings.
CertainTeed Presidential Shake
CertainTeed's original shake-look luxury shingle: two laminated layers with sculpted tabs, about 350 lb per square, and a 4 in exposure. Presidential Shake TL is a separate product: a three-layer version (about 468 lb/sq) rated UL 2218 Class 4 with the same size, exposure, wind and warranty terms.
CertainTeed Carriage House
A heavy, steep-slope shingle with 8 in exposure and scalloped tabs that imitate cut slate; CertainTeed recommends slopes of 9:12 or more to show the pattern, and lists it as Class 4. It is sold in nine colours including green, blue and red.
Owens Corning shingles
Owens Corning Duration
Owens Corning's TruDefinition Duration, its main architectural shingle: a woven fabric strip in the nailing zone (SureNail), high-contrast color blends, a Class 3 impact rating and up to 160 mph wind cover.
Owens Corning Oakridge
Owens Corning's value architectural shingle: a double layer through the nailing zone instead of Duration's fabric strip, no impact class, and 110 mph wind cover (130 with six nails and starter).
IKO shingles
IKO Dynasty
IKO's performance architectural shingle: a slightly larger shingle than most (40⅞ × 13¾ in) with a woven, reinforced nailing strip, a Class 3 impact rating and 14 colors.
IKO Nordic
IKO's Class 4 impact-resistant shingle: the Dynasty format on a thicker, polymer-modified asphalt that stays flexible, sold in select markets in six colors.
IKO Cambridge
IKO's mainstream architectural line, sized larger than many rivals (the maker's 'Advantage' size) so three bundles cover a square, with a Class 3 impact rating and a 10-year blue-green algae warranty.
IKO Royal Estate
IKO's heavier designer shingle with irregularly cut tabs and deep shadow bands in four slate-inspired blends, rated Class 3 for impact.
Malarkey shingles
Atlas shingles
Atlas Pinnacle Pristine
Atlas's premium architectural shingle: an oversized 42-inch shingle with 3M Scotchgard Protector algae granules, a Class 3 impact rating, in 19 colors.
Atlas ProLAM
Atlas's value architectural shingle in the same oversized 42-inch format as Pinnacle Pristine, with algae-resistant granules and a Class 3 impact rating, in fewer colors.
TAMKO shingles
TAMKO Heritage
TAMKO's standard laminated shingle, redesigned with TriShield technology; stated wind coverage reaches 130 mph only with the high wind application.
TAMKO Titan XT
TAMKO's wind- and impact-focused line: a reinforced nailing zone, a UL 2218 Class 3 rating, and wind coverage up to 160 mph with TAMKO's high wind application.
How to choose between them
Hail country: look at the impact class first. A Class 4 shingle can lower your insurance premium; ask your insurer what they discount before you pay for one.
Coast and open plains: compare maximum wind warranties, and what each needs to reach it — usually six nails per shingle and the maker's starter strip and ridge caps.
Humid and shaded roofs: the black streaks on old roofs are algae. Lines with copper granules carry an algae warranty; compare its length.
Everywhere: the installer. A maker's strongest warranty is usually only offered through its certified contractors, and covers their workmanship too. Ask which tier your roofer can register.
Shingle brand questions
What is the best architectural shingle brand?
No brand wins on every count. Among the 19 lines here, IKO Nordic and GAF Timberline UHDZ and GAF Timberline AS II and GAF Grand Sequoia and CertainTeed Presidential Shake and CertainTeed Carriage House carry a Class 4 impact rating, the highest stated wind warranty is 160 mph and GAF's WindProven warranty states no top speed (each with the maker's accessories), and warranties differ mostly in how long the non-prorated period lasts. The installer matters more than the label: most failures are installation and flashing, not shingle defects.
Do shingle brands cost different amounts?
Somewhat, but the roof's size, pitch, tear-off and local labour move the price far more. Our quote engine prices architectural shingles as one class: about $12,400–$14,300 for a 2,000 sq ft house at a 6/12 pitch with tear-off, roughly $600 per square installed at US-average wages.
What does Class 4 impact rating mean?
UL 2218 drops steel balls of increasing size on a shingle; Class 4 survives the largest, a 2-inch ball. Many insurers in hail states discount premiums for a Class 4 roof. Class 3 survives a 1.75-inch ball.
